A few of us have commented that the club enthusiam for cycling is good and strong starting into 2017. Particularly for the Saturday long steady spins. This is great and long may it last. The Wednesday turbo sessions are also well worth attending - to get some "intervals" under the belt. JD puts you through the paces.

The Saturday spin group sizes do need to be discussed. Sometimes there are too many cyclists in some groups. This leads to a longer profile for cars to overtake, particularly going up hills as the group typically lengthens even more as stronger climbers are further ahead. It is an accident waiting to happen, someone will get clipped by a car (or worse). If we cycle in a large group we are not the ideal road users; we share the space with traffic and we should not inadvertently p!$$ them off.

All we need to do is split the group at the outset. Aidan Hammond provided feedback that the optimal group size is 8 - the magic number. Some of you might have experienced that it is more efficient to operate an up-and-over road train with a group of 6 or 8 than a larger group.

As a club, we had been fairly diligent about this in previous years so we should not relax our standards starting into 2017. Some new members may not be aware of some of our cycling etiquette.

So - suggested protocol for Saturday spins: maximum group size should be 10. For numbers presenting above 10:
11 - split into 5 + 6.
12 - split into 6 + 6.
13 - split into 7 + 6.
14 - split into 7 + 7 or 8 + 6.
15 - split into 8 + 7.
16 - split into 8 + 8.
17 - split into 9 + 8.
18 - split into 9 + 9 or 10 + 8 or 6 + 6 +6.
etc -

You get the idea... no more than 10 in each pack.
