Here is procedure for Trinity.
What is the Testing ?

Graded incremental tests commence at low exercise intensity and progressively increase in intensity load or running velocity) every 3 min. Metabolic data are continuously collected via a facemask (male athletes need to be clean shaven on day of testing), heart rate data are collected using standard chest strap and a small blood sample for lactate assessment is collected from the middle finger of the right hand at 2 min into each 3 min rest or exercise element.

Data (VO2, HR and lactate) are plotted versus exercise intensity, threshold intensities identified and appropriate training advice (individualised HR zones) provided.

Cost ?

Graded incremental tests on triathletes can be performed for either cycling (cost 60 Euro) or running (cost 60 Euro), tests include medical evaluation, haematological assessment anthropometric assessment (height, mass, % fat, BMI), lung function tests pre-and post exercise, if a triathlete required testing both running and cycling (cost 100 Euro) as medical components are not repeated .

How to book a session ?

Tests are only performed in the mornings from Monday to Friday, with teaching committments the maximum they can handle per day is currently 2 per morning, testing starts at 08:30. They also need to know age, gender, training and health status on potential candidates prior to scheduling.

Who to Contact ?

Contact Bernard Donne bdonne@tcd.ie to book a session.

Individuals over 40 must contact Dr N Mahony (njmahony@tcd.ie) in advance of booking to ensure medical suitability (because of the increased risk of abnormalities / contraindications to maximal exercise testing in males over 40) and if necessary / requested bring reports from previous medical investigations to confirm specialist diagnosis of an investigated medical complaint or investigation.
What to bring ?

Individuals MUST refrain from training in the 24 hours before a scheduled test, arrive clean shaven in the facial region, in good health, carbohydrate loaded and well hydrated. If cycling they must bring the appropriate training gear, their cycling shoes and their cycling pedals, shower facilities on site bring towel for after shower.

Note : if cycling bring your pedals and cycling shoes, bring dimensions of distance from center of bottom bracket to top of saddle along the line of the seat post, bring dimensions of distance from tip of saddle to center of handlebars;
