Junior Beast of the East 2016

It’s the one, the only, the “Junior Beast of the East Triathlon”, it’s back and it is going to be better than ever before!  This year we have moved our race venue to Greystones town, to a new course and it will be AMAZING!  We have created a stunning new course that is easier for you to get to, has tons of parking and is really compact making for an amazing family experience with HUGE support for the superstars, you guys the triathletes!

Entries are now OPEN here on the Triathlon Ireland Website.  Find the event on the race calendar and click on the ENTER button.

The Junior Beast of the East will take place this year on Sunday, September 25th and once again is a fully sanctioned Triathlon Ireland event brought to you by Wicklow Triathlon Club Juniors.  This time we bring you a spectacular sea swim in the shelter of Ireland’s east coast at “The Cove”, Greystones.  Not only is this a super sheltered place to swim but it is a natural amphitheatre allowing your supporters clap and cheer and watch you all the way through your epic swim!  The bike course is on a 1km “criterium” styled lap of the scenic town of Greystones with the run along the picturesque promenade on Greystones’ Marine Road looking down on the Irish Sea below.  We really think this is just about the ultimate race course we can build for a junior race and we’re sure you’ll agree when you see it!

Get the latest news on our dedicated Junior Beast of the East Facebook page!

The junior committee has put together a massive event which is open to all juniors from 8 to 15 years of age with a big focus on participation.  You will need to be a member of Triathlon Ireland or a holder of a one day license on the race day but don’t worry, we can sort this as part of your entry.  We are calling on all triathlon clubs, swimming clubs, cycling clubs, athletic clubs, rugby and football clubs, schools, societies and anybody who feels that they are up to a challenge to join us in Wicklow for the Junior Beast of the East Triathlon.  Keep an eye on this page as we will publish instructions and links to help you enter and prepare for the race.

We are now offering entries to absolutely anybody within the age categories listed below. To enter the race follow THIS LINK to the Triathlon Ireland website race calendar where you can click on the ENTER button.  We will have our legendary goodie bag and super purse of prizes to share out making it really worth while coming along.

We are aiming to promote triathlon to a new and wider audience and in parallel, promote healthy exercise as a fun way to use your spare time right across the community.  We need you to encourage your brothers and sisters, friends, relations, neighbours, school pals and anybody else you think can make it around the course, we know that they will feel so proud of what they did when they have their finishers medal!

Why do we do this you might well ask?  Put very simply, we have a lot of experience encouraging young people into sport through triathlon and we see the joy, happiness, the confidence and satisfaction it brings to them every day.  This is far too precious not to share around so this is our chance to do just that, share!

We ask that you please spread the news to anybody you feel is up to the challenge.  Please tell people face to face, use your facebook profile to share the web address of this page, tweet it to your classmates or tell your parents, your club coach, PE teacher or school principal.  Even better, why not challenge your best friend to a race, it has to be more fun than having a bucket of iced water poured over your head!

Don’t be put off by any part of the race; for example the swim which is often a bit daunting for some athletes.  Send us an email or post a message below here and we will explain how we cater for you in these cases.  Remember this is all about you challenging yourself and we will do everything we can for you on race day.  There is no other feeling like the pride as you cross the finish line.

What is the Junior Beast of the East?

You may not be familiar with the sport so, this is a triathlon which is a race comprising of a swim followed immediately by a bicycle course and then a running race without stopping in between except perhaps to change your outfit.  These changes are known as “transitions” where you will for example remove a wetsuit and put on a bike helmet to start the bike race and then after this put on running shoes for the running race phase.  The triathlon race is a race from the start of the swim to the end  of the run.  For most people however, triathlons are for the most part a challenge, the objective being to pace ones self to reach the finish.  Triathlon events are fantastic goals to set yourself and give you an amazing sense of satisfaction and confidence when you stomp across the finish line.  Trust us when we say this:  Until you try it you simply can not understand the pride you will have in your achievement.  Go on… you know you can do it!

How long is the course?

Well this will depend on how old you are.  We will have four races on the day for ages 8 – 9 year old, 10 – 11 year old, 12 – 13 year old and 14 – 15’s.   Each race will have a different distance swim, cycle and run course and the table below explains.

8-9 100m 1km 800m
10-11 200m 2km 1.6km
12-13 300m 4km 2.4km
14-15 400m 6km 3.2km

Your age on December 31st 2016 decides which age category you will be entered into.

We have quite some experience of running triathlon races and to ensure this race is absolutely top quality we have applied for and received sanction from Triathlon Ireland, the national governing body for the sport.  This guarantees you that a considerable amount of planning has gone into the event to ensure that we achieve a really demanding standard of safety and that your enjoyment, sport and dignity are promoted to the highest standard possible.

We will be adding news to this page very soon and will have more specific instructions about the event and how you can enter.  Please check back but in the meantime, get chatting with your family, friends, classmates or clubmates and remember to share a link to this page.  This really will be a day to remember!

  1. I have registered my 11 year old for this triathlon. She does a lot of swimming in the pool, is it advisable to do a sea swim before hand?
Also is it possible to register on the day as I have a second daughter who may want to opt in then.

    Thanks so much

    1. Unfortunately for her sister we can not take entries on the day. She would have to register ahead of the event. In the case of both athletes, we have a rescue boat patrolling the course, several kayaks in the water and a crew of marshals in wetsuits swimming with the competitors. Nobody needs to be even slightly anxious, everybody does really well and is either encouraged or helped through the swim.
It is really good for their confidence to feel the cold water, experience some waves and get comfortable in the sea. The best way to get through the swim is to imagine you are in a pool, ignore cold, waves and such like. Focus on swimming neatly and with their normal swim stroke, these guys always surprise us and stun their parents in the swims!

      Hope that helps?

  2. Hi just a quick question can The Beast Of The East be done in relay. Have you a contact number??? I’m very interested for my son and to of his buddy’s to enter and I don’t want to tell them till I find out all the information. Thanks in advance.
    Regards Niamh Fennell Lawless

    1. Hi Niamh,
We don’t cater for relays but if you have people that can not swim or cycle or run then contact us at wicklowtriyouths @ gmail.com to explain and we will see if you can enter. We are all about inclusion but for fair sport we can not allow a relay team race against an individual. We will try to make some accommodation if we can.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

  3. Hi Cormac,
Have a chat with us at registration. If Cormac is capable of the 12 – 13 course and is accustomed to these distances then there is no technical reason why he can not enter this wave.

    Hope this helps?

The splash and dash will start at 13:00, first race wave will be 13:30 but expect an update and information bulletin very soon with details of the race registration location, times and instructions.

    1. Ansolutely fine! Any bike is OK, make sure you have a helmet with a fitting and working chin strap. Wetsuits will be compulsary for the sea swim too but any suit is fine too.

      Hope that helps

  4. Hi I have entered my daughters in Beast of the East and was wondering what time they will need to be there to get numbers and place their bikes in area etc they will be 13 in november, so will be in the 13 age group. Thanks. Tara

    1. Hi Tara,
The registration will be open from 11:00 at Greystones Harbour in the Angling Club next door to the new sailing club pavillion. All registration must be done before 12:30 for briefings and transition setup.

I hope this helps, see you on Sunday!

  5. The first race wave is at 13:30 and your wave would be starting within 45 minutes of this race Registration is open at 11:00 at Greystones Harbour (Greystones Ridge Angling Club House) with the transition only a short walk away.. We were constrained by roads availability so will run the races in the early afternoon.

    I hope this helps Eadine

  6. Hi Bernie,
Race entry is open until 23:45 Thursday night. Once your 15 year old is still 15 on the 31st of December 2016 then the entry will go through fine. You must enter via the Triathlon Irland web site and must have a one day license if she/he is not a Triathlon Ireland member. We can sort the license for you on the day when you register to collect your race number and goodie bag.

    Hope this helps

    1. Really sorry that we sold out! Unfortunately for some people we ran out of spaces but the event had closed for entry on Thursday night anyway to allow our registration team to build the race waves and prepare the registration packs.
Keep an eye on our web pages for information on 2017 races!
